How do I interrupt the process?

You can save and interrupt the game by selecting "Return to Home" from the quick menu on the screen after holing out.
You can save your shot by selecting "Back to Home" in the quick menu.
You can also select "Return to Home" from the quick menu in the middle of a shot.
You can also select "Return to Home" in the quick menu in the middle of a shot, but the play data up to the halfway point will be discarded.
